Description

What is Megafer/Encefer/Venofer Injection?

Iron sucrose is used as a source of iron for iron-deficiency anaemia in Kenya. It is given when oral iron therapy is ineffective or impractical, by slow intravenous injection or intravenous infusion in sodium chloride 0.9%. The dose is calculated according to body-weight and iron deficit, a usual dose being the equivalent of 100 mg of iron administered not more than 3 times weekly. The maximum single dose is 200 mg of iron. A small test dose should be administered initially. Iron sucrose has also been given by mouth.

Adverse Effects of Venofer, Treatment, and Precautions

Iron sucrose injection is strongly alkaline and must not be administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. The injection should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma, eczema, anaphylaxis, or other allergic disorders
